This page features the sites of the best independent book publishers in the
United States as selected by John Kremer, author of 1001 Ways to Market Your
Books. Here are the criteria used in making this list:
- No conglomerate book publishers.
- No book publishers affiliated with other companies, associations, universities, or organizations.
- No non-profit book publishers.
- The book publisher must publish books with great cover designs and interior text designs.
- The book publisher must publish books with good content and editorial selection.
- The book publisher must carry out great marketing programs.
- They must have at least ten books in print.
- They must have at least one title that has sold 25,000+ copies.
This site, then, features book publishers who are creating great books and innovative marketing campaigns without the help of
some outside agency, association, or company. Because of these criteria, we cannot list some really good book publishers such as
Andrews McMeel (associated with Universal Press Syndicate), Globe Pequot Press (owned by a larger media group), Chronicle Books
(affiliated with the San Francisco Chronicle), Graywolf Press (a non-profit publisher), AMACOM Books (affiliated with the American Management Association), Milkweed Editions
(another non-profit publisher), Beacon
Press (a division of the Unitarian Universalist Asssociation), The Mountaineers Books (affiliated with an association), Jossey-Bass
(now a subsidiary of John Wiley), or Microsoft Press (affiliated with Microsoft Corporation).
When the above list started getting too large, I decided to dedicate another web page to these dependent publishers:
Top 101 Dependent Book Publishers. Go there to check on the details of
these and many other superb book publishers who are not independent, but who are publishers worthy of recognition.
Also check out the Independent Book Publishers Hall of Fame and the
Independent Publishers Bestsellers List.
Book Publishers — Check out these book publishers to see examples of good book design and great marketing
campaigns. You can learn a lot from these fellow book publishers.
Book Authors — These book publishers are among the best independent book publishers. If you are tired of submitting
to the major New York book publishers and are looking for a publishing company that will treat you and your book right check
out these companies. You'll be glad you did.
Please note that this is a very personal list, based on the sole judgment of John Kremer. If you'd like to nominate your
publishing company or another book publisher, please email John Kremer. I know
that I have missed some book publishers I truly would like to add to this list. Your company might be one of those. Thanks for your
support. — John Kremer, author of 1001 Ways to Market Your Books
“I just wanted to tell you how grateful I am for your site. I found you quite by accident, and in looking through it,
I found your list of the best independent book publishers. I sent a query to eight of them, and not only received good responses,
but eventually signed a contract with one, Pruett Publishing. Mr. Pruett and his staff have been everything I've dreamed of,
and we've created a wonderful partnership for the production of my book. Thank you so much for helping me achieve my dream
of becoming a published author.” — Lin Rampey
“With a specialty press, you get a higher quality book. It took me some years to realize these blatant facts.” — Thomas Ligotti,
author of My Work Is Not Yet Done: Three Tales of Corporate Horror

stories from his own and others' experiences. He knows his subject, imparting important information in a
fast-paced, very open way. Extremely good stuff here.” —
