Author to give away 1 million copies

Another author wrote me saying he had hoped to give away 10,000 copies of his book, but after reading last week's newsletter, he upped his goal to one million copies.

But he made a major mistake by my experience. He requires people to sign up for his free newsletter before they can download his free ebook.

Here's my response to his email to me:

If you want to give away that many books, you can't force people to sign up for your newsletter before they can get the book. You should count on them signing up for your newsletter after reading the free ebook (which should have promos for the newsletter built into the book).

I understand people's desire to get subscriptions to their free ezines, but forcing people to sign up for a newsletter before giving them an advertised free ebook diminishes the response by at least 50% in my experience.

So my question to you is simple: Do you want subscribers to your ezine, or do you want readers for your book? Personally, I'd always choose readers for my book -- because the book would have built-in promos for my ezine as well as anything else I've created. And the book would be so good, 80% of the readers would sign up for my ezine.

The minute you put any kind of requirement on something you are offering for free, you diminish response to the point that the free promo is no longer effective.

I have founded two websites for giving books away free as ebooks:
http://www.AllBooksFree.com and http://www.FreeBooksForAll.com. All Books Free is devoted to novels, poems, and children's books, while Free Books for All is devoted to nonfiction books.

Last week, I received the following email from Roy Hayes, a newsletter subscriber and author of The Last Days of Las Vegas:

I just checked the metrics at my website, and found that your site
http://www.allbooksfree.com was at the top of the January referrer URL list, with 207,503,488 bytes and 693 files downloaded. (This looks like about 86 copies of
The Last Days of Las Vegas that your visitors downloaded.)

These data blow other Free Ebook websites out of the tub - and there are rather more than 30 others, who've carried Last Days since about the 21st of December.

The numbers from your website are astonishing -- over 848% greater than the next most active free Ebook website (January only) - which has been carrying the book since late December.

Another author's passion: New York Times Bestseller

Another author has a big goal: Get on the New York Times bestseller list. Kevin Daum, author of Roar! Get Heard in the Sales and Marketing Jungle, is so committed to that goal that he had New York Times Best Seller tattooed on his chest in reverse image so he could see it in the mirror every morning to remind him of his goal.

He's promoting his book and bestseller goal via his blog, website, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and via a publicity campaign.

But, unless his publicity campaign is very effective, chances are slim that he will hit the list. The social campaign doesn't have enough eyeballs to generate the sales he's hoping for (his Twitter account, for example, has only 147 followers - @awesomeroar, while his Facebook account has 220). So he has to have some big media hits (New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Bloomberg Radio, Today Show, etc.).

It's great to have big goals, but you need to build a good foundation if you want to reach those goals.
